In the past, the relationship between cities and business was very different. Businesses paid taxes, contributed to the economy and the city provided services and a context for living. In the new era of smart, cities will play an increasingly crucial role in providing insight for business. Many types of city data can be increasingly leveraged outside the context of city hall. Already open data, such as maps and bus routes can be used in apps and citizen-facing technology. Potholes, broken streetlights and graffiti are reported via mobile apps every day. The multitude of data generated by cities can be harnessed to improve quality of life for citizens in many ways. From helping airlines streamline the commute to the airport for their customers, to helping local restaurants sell more pizzas in a snowstorm, the ability to predict and respond to these and many other business driving events is made possible by city data and collaboration between businesses and cities on that data.
